Short bio

Giuseppe Scarpa, Associate Professor of Telecommunications at University Federico II (UniNA), Naples, received the Laurea degree in Telecommunication Engineering and the PhD degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering in 2001 and 2005, respectively, from UniNA. During his PhD program he was awarded a Marie-Curie fellowship and was visiting student at Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA), Sophia Antipolis (F). In 2005 he was awarded a ERCIM “Alain Bensoussan” joint postdoc fellowship spent at the UTIA Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, joining the Pattern Recognition group led by Prof. Michal Haindl and at INRIA, joining the ARIANA project led by Prof. Josiane Zerubia. In 2018 G. Scarpa was Visting Professor at CIRAD (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement), Montpellier, France. In 2021 Giuseppe Scarpa received the “Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale” (ASN) as Full Professor of Telecommunications.

Research interests

Computer vision, pattern recognition, deep learning, remote sensing, data fusion (multi-temporal, multi-resolution/pansharpening, multi-sensor), image segmentation and classification, target and change detection, texture modeling, SAR imaging.

Publications and scores

Giuseppe Scarpa has published more than seventy international journals and conference papers in the fields of remote sensing, image processing and pattern recognition. His main contributes concern image segmentation, classification, object/change detection, SAR despeckling, and, more recently, multi-temporal, multi-sensor and multi-resolution (pansharpening) remote sensing data fusion through deep learning methods. His paper [Masi et al. (2016)] about deep learning-based pansharpening is one of the 20 most cited articles (out of more than 20000) of the MDPI Remote Sensing journal.
